What is Aikido?

AikidoAikido translates to "Harmonizing Energy."

“Ai” means,to meet, to come together, to harmonize. “Ki” means, the mind, the soul, the spirit. “Do” means, the way. Aikido More than just self-defense; it’s the commitment to a peaceful resolution of conflict whenever possible and a commitment to self-improvement through Aikido training. The founder, Professor Morihei Ueshiba called it “The Art of Peace”.

Aikido emphasizes the natural movements of the body into a fluid motion. An Aikidoka (practitioner) moves off the line of attack, gives a distracting strike, extends the attacker off balance into a circular/spiral redirection, seizes control of the off balance by means of leverage and timing. A throw, pin or immobilization of a wrist/arm lock is applied, rather than relying solely on punches and kicks.

The principles of Aikido are :

  1. Keep One Point
  2. Relax Completely
  3. Weight Underside
  4. Extend Ki
Aikido

Many Aikido schools train in varying degrees with weapons, including the jo (a staff 4 or 5 feet in length), the bokken (a wooden sword), and the tanto (a knife, usually made of wood, for safety). These weapons are used not only to teach defenses against armed attacks, but also to illustrate principles of Aikido movement, distancing, and timing. Weapons training enhances the natural movements of empty handed techniques.
